Over the past few years, kept between many project and tasks, a question I used to ask to myself a lot was "How should I prioritize all those things?". Luckily, I've managed to develop a method that works perfect for me and I hope you may get something out of this method if this is a topic you are struggling with.

How to cut through noise and prioritize?

Step 1: Define your priorities and write them down

Writing things down is always helpful, especially when you’re in a complicated situation, or kept between many things to be done at a very short period of time.

Write down your goals, pick top 5 impactful tasks you need to do this week to serve to main goals, and cut everything else out or postpone.

One thing could be helpful here: Use the Covey’s matrix. Remember, you need to spend most of your time in Quandrant 2 here. If you do step 1 right, planning well, you may never even be in a situation like Quandrant 1- urgent and important.

Delegate or eliminate all the other tasks falling into Q3 and Q4 .

Step 2: Win back your calendar and time

I book several spots during a week, time to work on my priorities, and I'm turning off all the distractions such as email, slack or other notifications. It helps to focus on the big picture.

Step 3: Retrospect and Celebrate yourself

Every week, return back to your priorities and evaluate how you did last week against your goals: Are u perhaps putting more/less priorities? Are you realistic? Adjust and continue improving.

Be aware that, prioritisation is a skill, the more you keep exercising, the better you will become at it.
